London Stansted Airport launches new on-site solar farm
London Stansted Airport has launched a new on-site solar farm, marking the first of its kind at a London airport. The facility features more than 24,000 panels and was constructed and will be operated by Onsite Power, the commercial and industrial solar division of EDF.
The solar farm can produce up to 17.2 megawatts of direct current (DC) power, which converts to 12.8 megawatts of usable alternating current (AC) for the airport’s network. On peak sunny days, the installation can meet the airport’s entire electricity demand. Annually, the farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 7,000 homes.
This project is part of a £1.1 billion transformation programme aimed at meeting increasing energy needs, including the rising demand from electric vehicles. The initiative supports the airport’s goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions from its direct operations by 2038.
