London transport authorities confirm level boarding for Elizabeth line at Old Oak Common
The Department for Transport has approved an exemption from standard national platform height requirements for the Old Oak Common superhub in west London. This decision allows platforms 5 to 8 to be constructed at a height optimized for Elizabeth line trains, ensuring level boarding and step-free access.
This arrangement, agreed upon by HS2 Ltd, Network Rail, Transport for London (TfL), and the Department for Transport, aims to improve accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility, those with luggage, and parents with pushchairs. The station will serve as the 42nd Elizabeth line station, providing connections to over 100 destinations and facilitating seamless interchanges with HS2 services.
Separately, TfL has highlighted the broader challenges of modernizing London’s aging infrastructure. David McKenna, Lead Sponsor for London Underground and Elizabeth Line Renewals, noted that the authority faces significant financial constraints and a funding model that often prioritizes immediate operational needs over long-term asset planning. TfL aims to increase the share of journeys made by walking, cycling, or public transport to 80% by 2041.
