London Underground upgrades speed and reliability ahead of Wimbledon and 2027 timetable

Transport for London is accelerating improvements across its network. A signalling revamp on the Metropolitan line has already cut travel times by one minute and a new timetable is set for January 2027, with a target of 30 trains per hour through Central London by 2028. These changes form part of the £5.5 billion Four Lines Modernisation Project, which upgrades the Metropolitan, District, Circle and Hammersmith & City lines and is now expected to finish in 2029.

Separately, TfL has invested £500,000 in the District line ahead of the Wimbledon Championships. Upgraded track circuits, heat‑protective coatings and enhanced communication systems, carried out in partnership with Network Rail, aim to prevent the signalling faults that caused closures and delays during last year’s tournament. Claire Mann, TfL’s chief operating officer, said the work will improve reliability and enable a faster response to any issues.
