Londrina recycles 800 tons of dry waste monthly
The city of Londrina recycles approximately 800 tons of dry waste every month, representing about 70% of all material collected from more than 250,000 properties. This process supports roughly 260 workers across seven cooperatives coordinated by the Companhia Municipal de Trânsito e Urbanização (CMTU). The recycled materials, including paper, plastic, glass, and metal, serve as raw materials for new products.
However, recycling efficiency is hindered by contamination. Cooperative representatives report that food scraps, diapers, toilet paper, and pet waste are frequently mixed with recyclables. This contamination prevents material reuse and creates hazardous working conditions for recycling staff.
To address these issues and expand service, the CMTU is working with cooperatives and the Public Ministry to implement a new selective collection model starting next year. The plan aims to increase collection frequency and extend services to previously unserved regions.
