Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary approaches 100th anniversary
The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane, the world’s oldest koala protection area, is approaching its 100th anniversary. Established in 1927, the facility holds a Guinness World Record.
Chief veterinarian Galit Tzipori has expressed significant concern regarding the survival of the species. Koalas face critical threats from habitat loss and dangerous infectious diseases.
The sanctuary currently houses approximately 100 koalas, including Maximus, an 18-year-old male weighing ten kilograms. Staff members work to manage the unique personalities and health needs of the animals, which rely almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves for nutrition.
