Loneliness epidemic and new initiatives to combat social isolation
Discussions regarding the rising epidemic of loneliness highlight how the loss of spontaneous, repeated contact—a concept known as propinquity—impacts adult friendships. As life responsibilities like careers and family increase, maintaining close relationships often requires deliberate planning rather than the natural proximity found in school or shared workplaces.
In response to social isolation, the Hradec Králové Diocese is reviving a tradition of connecting with the vulnerable. The diocesan magazine, Adalbert, will introduce a new monthly section titled ‘Letters to the Sick’. This initiative, coordinated by hospital chaplain Martin Weisbauer, aims to provide spiritual and emotional support to the elderly and ill, fostering a sense of community between caregivers and those receiving care.
