Loneliness rates rise among young adults in the Netherlands

Recent data and local studies in the Netherlands highlight significant levels of loneliness, particularly among young adults. In the Almere and Lelystad regions, nearly one in three young adults aged 16 to 25 report feeling strongly lonely, a figure higher than the national average of 23 percent.

In other regions such as Veendam, Stadskanaal, and Borger-Odoorn, loneliness varies by neighborhood. In certain areas like Veendam-Oude Ae, approximately one in five adults report strong feelings of loneliness. Interestingly, the data suggests that older adults (65+) experience loneliness less frequently than the general adult population in these municipalities.

Researchers note that loneliness among youth is often invisible. Even those with active social lives, such as attending school or sports clubs, may feel a lack of true connection or identity within their peer groups. Experts suggest that young people may avoid discussing these feelings to avoid the stigma of being labeled as lonely, which they may perceive as a personal failure.
