Long Beach and Mattapoisett Libraries Launch Summer Reading Programs

The Long Beach Public Library in California opened its annual eight‑week summer reading program, “Plant a Seed, Read!,” running from June 13 through August 8. The free initiative offers books, activities and performances at all 12 library sites, with participants earning points for reading, attending events and completing challenges. Mayor Rex Richardson highlighted the program as an investment in community opportunity, while library director Cathy De Leon noted its focus on curiosity and lifelong learning. Sponsorship comes from the library foundation, Friends of the Library and the Port of Long Beach.

Meanwhile, the Mattapoisett Public Library in Massachusetts kicked off its Kids’ Summer Reading Program on June 23. The program features a petting‑zoo launch, puzzle races, storytime sessions, arts‑and‑crafts activities and pirate‑themed events, with registration required for most activities and for eligibility for prizes. Both libraries emphasize free, open‑to‑the‑public events aimed at children, teens and adults to promote reading and community engagement throughout the summer.
