Long Beach resident injured during ICE detainment
Ricardo Gonzalez, a U.S. citizen and former Long Beach city employee, was injured during an encounter with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in North Long Beach. The incident occurred near the intersection of Elm Avenue and 56th Street while Gonzalez was riding an electric bicycle.
Witnesses and family members allege that Gonzalez was struck by an unmarked federal vehicle and subsequently subjected to repeated Taser use. Video footage circulating online shows Gonzalez handcuffed and pinned to the ground, crying out that his arm was broken. Local residents reportedly intervened during the confrontation to defend him.
The Long Beach Police Department responded to a request for assistance from ICE agents regarding reports of vehicle vandalism and a person in need of medical attention. Officers found Gonzalez handcuffed and bleeding; they transported him to a local fire station where his handcuffs were removed before he was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson and Congressman Robert Garcia have both condemned the incident. Garcia described the encounter as a ‘brutal attack,’ while Richardson has called for an inquiry into the detention. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security stated that ICE officers ‘followed their training and used the minimum amount of force’ during the operation.
