Long Island deer rescued after antlers snag in backyard hammock

A deer was rescued in Lake Grove, Long Island, after its antlers became entangled in a backyard hammock. Frank Floridia, president of the nonprofit Strong Island Animal Rescue League, responded to the homeowner's call for assistance.

Wearing an antler-proof vest, Floridia used scissors to carefully cut through the netting to free the distressed animal. The rescue was described as a precarious situation, as stressed deer can suffer heart attacks and rescuers face risks of being trampled or impaled.

Floridia noted that this is the fifth deer he has rescued from makeshift traps on Long Island this month. He attributed the increased frequency of deer entering residential backyards to ongoing construction in the area. He advised homeowners to remove unused hammocks and athletic equipment, such as volleyball or soccer nets, to prevent similar incidents.
