The rocket, which lifted off at 8:02 pm local time, experienced a flight anomaly approximately 85 seconds into its ascent, resulting in an explosion that destroyed both the vehicle and its payload.

The mission was intended to deploy the ChinaSat-4B (Zhongxing-4B) communications satellite into orbit. The loss of the satellite, which is part of a series used for telecommunications and potentially strategic services, represents a significant setback for Beijing’s space ambitions. Chinese state media, including Xinhua, confirmed the failure and stated that an investigation into the cause of the anomaly is currently underway.

This incident marks the second known failure of the Long March 7A since its maiden flight in March 2020, which also ended unsuccessfully. The rocket had since completed over a dozen successful missions before this latest failure. The event occurs as China continues to invest heavily in its space program, aiming to land astronauts on the Moon before 2030 and competing with the United States' Artemis program.
