Long-tail keywords show higher conversion rates in search marketing

A study of 40 companies indicates that long-tail keywords—specific, multi-word search queries—convert significantly better than broad, single-word terms. Data shows that six-word searches achieved a conversion rate of 1.94%, compared to just 0.17% for one-word searches, representing an 11x difference in effectiveness.

Broad keywords often attract users who are in the early browsing stages of a purchase rather than ready to act. Furthermore, the rise of AI-generated summaries in search engine results has led to a decline in click-through rates for informational, broad queries. In contrast, long-tail queries typically represent higher user intent and face less competition, making them more valuable for advertisers and publishers despite their lower individual search volumes.
