Longevity milestones celebrated in Italy

Several individuals in Italy are being recognized for their remarkable longevity and long-standing community service.

In Locana, Piedmont, Maria Giulia Ballarini, who will turn 91 in November, was honored by the local municipality for her 56 years of continuous operation at her newsstand and tobacco shop. Her son, Claudio Conti, was also recognized for his 34 years of service. The pair previously received honors from the regional section of the Federation of Italian Tobacconists.

In Paternopoli, Avellino, Maria Lapio celebrated her 106th birthday, earning the title of Dean of her community. The province of Avellino holds the record for longevity in the Campania region, with a rate of 0.24 centenarians per thousand inhabitants, surpassing the regional average of 0.18. Other notable elderly residents in Italy include Lucia Laura Sangenito, the oldest person in the country, and Angelo Peressini, who reached 109 years of age in July.
