Longevity research advances through biotechnology and lifestyle studies

Scientific research into aging is expanding, focusing on biological mechanisms to improve longevity and health. Key areas of study include the accumulation of genetic mutations, chromosomal degradation, the buildup of cellular debris, reduced stem cell capacity, mitochondrial dysfunction, and the deterioration of the gut microbiome.

One promising therapeutic approach involves “senolytics,” a class of drugs designed to target senescent cells. These cells no longer divide and release inflammatory substances that damage surrounding tissues, contributing to age-related diseases. Additionally, Nobel laureate Venki Ramakrishnan has identified strategies such as the reactivation of telomerase—an enzyme capable of lengthening telomeres—to prevent cells from becoming senescent.

Complementing biotechnological advancements, lifestyle interventions such as exposure to green spaces are being recognized for their impact on aging populations. For individuals over 60, access to parks and gardens is associated with improved physical health, mood, and cognitive function. Research suggests that natural environments can help reduce stress, combat social isolation, and lower the risks of depression and cognitive decline.
