Longevity research shifts focus toward quality of life and prevention
As global life expectancy increases, health experts are shifting focus from merely extending lifespan to improving the quality of those additional years. The emphasis is moving toward autonomy, well-being, and prevention rather than just treating diseases after they manifest.
In Brazil, researcher Ursula Coelho and her healthtech company, EON 2Life, are utilizing biotechnology and artificial intelligence to support the ‘Health 5.0’ concept. This approach uses data to provide personalized, preventive care by analyzing bodily signals to help individuals make informed health decisions before problems arise. Her multidisciplinary team integrates neuroscience, medicine, engineering, and nutrition to address health holistically.
In Portugal, discussions highlight a systemic need to restructure healthcare for an aging society. Currently, in OECD countries, prevention accounts for less than 5% of total health expenditure. Experts argue that healthcare systems must move away from a model organized around treating specific diseases and institutions, toward a person-centered approach that prioritizes lifestyle factors—such as nutrition, mental health, and physical activity—to delay the onset of illness.
