Longevity science breakthroughs advance muscle engineering and metabolic health
Recent advancements in longevity science are transitioning from speculative theories to clinical applications, focusing on engineered biological solutions and metabolic regulation.
Researchers at the Beijing Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, led by Ng Shyh-Chang, have developed myografts. These are vascularized skeletal muscle tissues grown from a subject’s own cells that contract spontaneously without neural input. In studies involving aged mice, these grafts functioned as endocrine organs, releasing myokines that improved lean mass, bone density, and brain health while reducing inflammation.
Parallel developments in metabolic health are exploring the systemic effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists. Originally used for diabetes and obesity, these compounds are being studied for their ability to combat cellular senescence and ‘inflammaging’. Research suggests these therapies may protect the brain, heart, and kidneys by reducing systemic inflammation and improving mitochondrial efficiency, potentially slowing biological aging processes.
