L'Oréal Polska faces charges over Garnier environmental claims

The President of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) has brought charges against L'Oréal Polska regarding the marketing of its Garnier brand. The regulator alleges that the company engaged in misleading environmental claims through its ‘Product Impact Labelling’ (PIL) system.

Between August 2021 and June 2025, Garnier used a scale from A to E to help consumers assess the environmental impact of its products. Products receiving an ‘A’ rating were described as ‘best in class in terms of impact on the environment and communities.’ However, UOKiK found that these ratings were based solely on comparisons with other L'Oréal group products rather than objective environmental criteria or the broader market.

As a result, consumers may have been misled into believing these products met specific ecological standards when they were simply performing better relative to other items within the same corporation. L'Oréal Polska ceased the practice following the investigation and faces potential fines of up to 10 percent of its turnover.
