Loram begins ETCS digital signalling installation on second rail grinder
Loram has commenced the installation of Hitachi Rail’s European Train Control System (ETCS) digital in-cab signalling equipment on a second rail grinder. The upgrade is being performed on the C44 Rail Grinder (vehicle C44-02) at Loram’s engineering facility in Derby.
This project marks Loram’s first ETCS fitment funded through the East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP). The initiative follows the successful integration of ETCS technology on Loram’s RGC rail grinding unit earlier this year. The rollout is a collaborative effort involving Hitachi Rail, Network Rail, the ECDP, and Colas Rail, which operates the C44 grinding fleet.
The implementation of digital signalling is part of a broader strategy to transition the UK railway toward digital systems and remove traditional lineside signals on key routes, such as the East Coast Main Line. The C44 fleet, which includes three units, provides essential track maintenance and asset management support across the Network Rail infrastructure.
