Lorca Mayor denounces sale of former military land to private fund

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, has denounced the Spanish Ministry of Defense for selling approximately 700,000 square meters of land in Carraclaca to a private investment fund for 1.4 million euros.

Three years ago, the central government had committed to using this former military training ground to build 900 homes for young people. However, the public housing project was never realized. Following a public auction in July, the land was acquired by a single-member limited company dedicated to real estate development.

The Lorca City Council had previously requested that the Ministry transfer the land to the municipality free of charge to create a peri-urban forest for sports and recreation, but the request was denied. Mayor Gil criticized the move as “pure and hard real estate speculation” and accused the PSOE government of using public land to generate cash rather than fulfilling housing promises.
