Lord Briggs appointed next UK Supreme Court President

Lord Briggs of Westbourne has been appointed as the next President of the United Kingdom Supreme Court. He is scheduled to take office in January 2027 following the retirement of the current President, Lord Reed of Allemuir.

Approved by the King on the advice of the Prime Minister and the Lord Chancellor, Lord Briggs will become the fifth President of the institution since its establishment in 2009. A Justice of the Supreme Court since 2017, Briggs has an extensive background in commercial and chancery law. His previous judicial roles include serving as a High Court judge in 2006 and a Lord Justice of Appeal in 2013.

Briggs is noted for his work in civil justice reform, having led the Chancery Modernisation Review and the Civil Courts Structure Review. He also managed the significant Lehman Brothers insolvency litigation between 2009 and 2013. He previously served as attorney general to the Duchy of Lancaster from 2001 to 2006.
