Andy Serkis confirms AI de‑aging, rejects token‑casting for Hunt for Gollum

Warner Bros. has begun filming *The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum* in New Zealand, with Andy Serkis directing and reprising his role as Gollum. The film reunites original trilogy talent Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood and Lee Pace, and adds Kate Winslet, Anya Taylor‑Joy, Jamie Dornan and Leo Woodall among others. Serkis said artificial intelligence will be used only for limited de‑aging and rejuvenation of certain returning characters, stressing that “every shot is created in a traditional way” and that AI will not generate scenes. He also emphasized that the movie will employ practical effects, miniatures and prosthetics alongside modern visual tools. Addressing casting criticism, Serkis explained that actors will be chosen for what fits Tolkien’s world, noting “the Shire feels very, very much like a very white… we won’t cast just to tick boxes.” The film is scheduled for worldwide theatrical release on 17 December 2027.
