Lordan Zafranović film sparks controversy at Belgrade film festival

The premiere of Lordan Zafranović’s film, ‘Zlatni rez ’42: Djeca Kozare’, at the 53rd FEST in Belgrade has sparked significant controversy and debate. The film, which explores the suffering of children and populations in Kozara and the Jasenovac camp during World War II, has received high praise from director Emir Kusturica, who described it as a ‘mythology’ and a masterful tribute to Serbian victims.

However, the project has faced intense criticism. Journalist Gordan Malić questioned the film’s artistic merits and raised unverified allegations regarding the use of funds from various sources, including the Serbian government and diaspora donations. Additionally, the film’s political associations have caused friction; Ivan Zafranović, the director’s son, expressed deep disappointment, distancing himself from his father’s recent public statements and criticizing the film’s use for political and propaganda purposes.

The film features Rene Bitorajac as Vjekoslav Maks Luburić, a key figure in the NDH concentration camp system, and aims to depict the historical atrocities committed against Serbs, Jews, and Roma.
