L'Oreal reports GLP-1 weight loss drugs are reshaping beauty and skincare markets
L'Oreal CEO Nicolas Hieronimus has identified the rise of GLP-1 weight loss medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, as a significant phenomenon impacting beauty and skincare consumption. The company noted that rapid weight loss can lead to side effects like skin sagging, particularly in the face, prompting the development of specialized products.
To address these changes, L'Oreal brands including SkinCeuticals and Kiehl's are offering products designed to complement the effects of GLP-1 use. The company has also expanded its presence in the clinical aesthetics space, increasing its stake in dermatology firm Galderma to 20% last December. Both L'Oreal and Galderma are reportedly conducting clinical trials to test products specifically for users concerned about loose skin.
Beyond skincare, the surge in GLP-1 use is driving broader shifts in consumer behavior. In the food and restaurant sectors, the trend is influencing a move toward nutrient-dense, high-protein, and high-fiber options as consumers seek satiety with smaller portion sizes.
