Mexico Tourism Commission approves gender equality and safety reforms

The Tourism Commission of the Chamber of Deputies has approved reforms to the General Tourism Law aimed at promoting substantive equality and security for women in Mexico’s tourism sector.

Proposed by Deputy Tania Palacios Kuri, the reforms seek to institutionalize gender perspective and human rights within national tourism policy. The measures include requiring tourism service providers to implement protocols for the prevention, attention, and referral of cases involving gender-based violence. Additionally, lodging establishments will be obligated to provide safe spaces and notify competent authorities when such incidents occur.

The initiative addresses the reality that while women make up over 55 percent of the tourism workforce, they continue to face inequalities and safety risks. The reform will strengthen coordination between the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Women to combat discrimination and violence through transversal public policies.
