Lorenia Valles leaves Mexican Senate for Sonora transformation role

Senator Lorenia Valles requested a leave of absence from her seat in the Mexican Senate, which was approved by the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies and will take effect on 22 June 2026. The leave allows her to register for the coordination of the Committees of Defense of the Transformation and of National Sovereignty in Sonora, with the call for candidates from all 17 states expected to be published the same day.

Valles highlighted her legislative record, noting she helped approve 29 constitutional reforms, 21 new laws and 100 other legal changes, and presented 26 initiatives, including proposals on cellphone use in schools and social‑media regulation for minors. She credited the Senate’s welfare program reforms for benefiting eight out of ten Mexican households and said the work will continue under President Claudia Sheinbaum and Governor Alfonso Durazo.
