Lorenzo Meyer urges Morena to protect Mexican democracy
Historian and academic Lorenzo Meyer has urged the Morena party to be ‘extremely careful’ to preserve the opportunity to establish a truly democratic regime in Mexico. Speaking during the party's 15th anniversary, Meyer emphasized the need to remain conscious of the delicacy of the current moment, noting that Mexico has historically lacked a formal democracy.
Meyer advised against making major decisions based solely on immediate contexts, particularly as the regional environment aligns more closely with Washington. He also addressed Mexico's historical isolation from Latin America, stating that while citizens feel culturally connected to the continent, the country has largely stood alone against the power of the United States since the late 19th century.
These observations come amid a rise in far-right movements in the region, specifically noting the political landscape in Brazil following election results involving Flávio Bolsonaro and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
