Mexican immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo killed by ICE agent in Houston, sparking calls for independent probe
On July 7, 2026, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52‑year‑old Mexican construction worker who had lived in the United States for 35 years, was shot in the abdomen by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a traffic stop in Houston, Texas. ICE initially said the agent fired in self‑defense after Salgado purportedly tried to ram a federal vehicle.
Three men who were in the van with Salgado – including his brother – later testified that no agent was in front of the vehicle, that the ICE agents were in unmarked SUVs that pursued and surrounded the van, and that Salgado never attempted to hit an officer. Surveillance video released by media shows the unmarked SUVs chasing the van but does not capture the exact moment of the shot. No body‑camera footage exists; the agents were not equipped with cameras.
The family’s attorney, Hugo Balderas‑Ibarra, and LULAC lawyer Domingo García said ICE is trying to cover up a “crime,” quoting García: “Están tratando de encubrir, en mi opinión, un crimen.” Local officials, the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and Harris County investigators have opened parallel inquiries, and the Harris County medical examiner has ruled the death a homicide.
Protests of more than 1,500 people took place in Houston’s Magnolia Park neighborhood. The Mexican government announced it will file criminal complaints in the United States, citing this killing as the latest of at least 17 deaths of Mexican nationals in ICE custody this year.
