Loreto electoral sites relocated after candidate death and staff expulsion

The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) has relocated polling stations in the Loreto region of Peru following the expulsion of electoral staff from the native communities of Nueva Yarina and Puerto Belén. The tension arose after the death of Sundi Simón Kamarampi, a candidate for the mayoralty of the Pastaza district representing the Renovación Popular party. Kamarampi reportedly died in a boat collision while campaigning.

As a result of the local opposition, approximately 936 voters must now travel to the district capital, Ullpayacu, to cast their ballots at designated schools. ONPE officials noted that the long distances and reliance on small boats may hinder voter participation. The electoral body has filed complaints with the Prosecutor's Office for obstruction of the electoral process and has requested support from the Armed Forces to ensure security at the new polling locations.

The National Jury of Elections (JNE) has called for a swift investigation into the circumstances of Kamarampi's death and has urged the Executive Branch to implement measures to protect candidates, poll workers, and citizens in the affected area.
