Loris Karius opens up on 2018 Champions League blunder and Union Berlin loan

German goalkeeper Loris Karius, currently on a one‑year loan from Liverpool to Bundesliga side Union Berlin, has spoken publicly about the two mistakes he made in the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid. The errors, which contributed to Liverpool’s defeat, were later linked to a concussion he suffered during the match. Karius said the incident led to severe criticism, death threats and a prolonged mental‑health struggle that threatened his career.

He now reflects on the episode in a recent interview and in a chapter of Michael Horen’s book “Glaube, Liebe, Klopp”. Karius also highlighted his gratitude for the support of former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp and expressed optimism about restarting his Bundesliga career with Union Berlin after a series of loan spells at clubs including Besiktas and Schalke 04.
