BC Conservatives propose healthcare fund and increased policing

Lorne Doerkson, interim leader of the BC Conservative Party, has introduced several key policy platforms as part of his campaign. To address rural healthcare challenges and emergency room closures, Doerkson pledged to establish a $50-million fund specifically for rural staffing and facility needs.

On public safety, the Conservatives plan to increase police presence by hiring 250 officers through the expansion of the Justice Institute of BC, alongside adding 500 RCMP members and 150 civilian staff over five years. The platform also includes hiring 50 new Crown prosecutors and working with the federal government to fund 20 additional trial judges.

Recent polling from the Angus Reid Institute indicates the Conservatives hold a five-point lead over the incumbent NDP, with 48 per cent of leaning or decided voters supporting the Conservatives compared to 43 per cent for the NDP. Key voter concerns include the cost of living, healthcare, and public safety.
