Los Alamos National Laboratory to Deploy Two NVIDIA‑HPE Supercomputers

The U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration announced that Los Alamos National Laboratory will host two next‑generation supercomputers, named Mission and Vision, as part of the Genesis Mission initiative. Hewlett Packard Enterprise will co‑design the systems while NVIDIA supplies its Vera Rubin platform, combining Vera CPUs with Rubin GPUs. The first Vera CPU server arrived this summer for early testing, allowing engineers to validate software and benchmark performance before full deployment slated for 2027 (Mission) and 2028 (Vision).

According to laboratory officials, the new architecture should deliver more than three times the CPU performance of the current Crossroads system, over four times the memory per core, and twelve times the AI performance of NVIDIA’s previous Hopper GPUs, while using less power. The project follows earlier DOE announcements of similar supercomputers at Argonne National Laboratory.

The supercomputers are intended to accelerate scientific research, national‑security simulations, and emerging agentic AI workloads, reducing discovery times from months to minutes.
