Los Alcarrizos mayor reports waste collection success as Santa Ana faces landfill collapse

Junior Santos, mayor of Los Alcarrizos in the Dominican Republic, said the municipality has resolved its solid‑waste collection problems. After installing a transfer station, reorganising routes and adding new equipment, daily collection rose from 130‑160 tonnes to about 221 tonnes. The administration also launched a "Zero Waste" phase with public education, smaller motor‑trucks for narrow streets and georeferenced trucks for residents to track service.

In Santa Ana, Venezuela, community leader Javier Salgado reported that the municipal landfill has collapsed, creating an open‑air dump and an environmental emergency. The local waste‑collection truck has been out of service for over two months, and a hired dump truck was abandoned over alleged unpaid fees. Residents fear fire‑hazardous gases and demand an immediate contingency plan from regional and national authorities.
