Los Ancares Leoneses Biosphere Reserve marks 20 years

The Los Ancares Leoneses Biosphere Reserve is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The reserve is managed by a consortium of four municipalities: Peranzanes, Vega de Espinareda, Villafranca del Bierzo, and Valle de Ancares.

Over the past two decades, the initiative has focused on preserving the local landscape and culture while promoting sustainable activities to combat rural depopulation. Local leaders note that the designation has helped maintain essential services and visibility for the region.

Beyond environmental protection, the reserve has played a key role in safeguarding intangible heritage and traditions, such as the dances of Fornela and the customs of Villafranca, which were previously at risk of being lost.
