Los Angeles accelerates infrastructure projects for 2028 Olympics

Los Angeles is accelerating infrastructure preparations for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games through significant waterfront and transit investments.

The Los Angeles Harbor Commission has approved over $70 million in construction projects to prepare the San Pedro waterfront for boating competitions. This includes a $67 million contract awarded to Griffith Co. for a new parking lot and the expansion of Harbor Boulevard, as well as a $3.7 million contract for CALTEC Corp. to build restroom facilities and shade structures at Wilmington Waterfront Park. These projects, totaling $86.4 million including design costs, are funded by the Port of Los Angeles’ public access investment plan and are scheduled for completion by early 2028.

Simultaneously, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) is seeking $2 billion in federal funding to expand the city's transit network. While $875 million has passed through the House Appropriations Committee, the remaining funds await Senate approval. To manage the expected surge in ridership, LA Metro plans to add 1,750 new buses to its fleet. Regional leaders have noted that while Congress previously approved $94.3 million for Olympic-related transit, substantial federal support remains critical to preventing congestion during the Games.
