Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass halts Lineage Logistics warehouse rebuild

A massive fire broke out on June 17, 2026 at the Lineage Logistics cold‑storage warehouse in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, destroying a 500,000‑square‑foot facility and leaving millions of pounds of rotting food. The blaze generated severe odors, fly infestations and air‑quality concerns that have persisted for weeks.

Mayor Karen Bass issued a third emergency executive order that stops any city consideration of Lineage’s plans to rebuild the site until a multi‑agency investigation is completed. The order also asks the Los Angeles City Council to adopt a moratorium on large cold‑storage facilities near schools, parks and residential areas, with Councilmember Ysabel Jurado set to introduce the ordinance.

Los Angeles County’s Department of Public Health has increased fines on Lineage to as much as $2,000 per day for ongoing pest‑control violations, issuing multiple citations for unsanitary conditions. Cleanup efforts are reported to be about halfway complete, but residents continue to complain of foul odors and health risks as schools in the area prepare to reopen on August 12.

Lineage has submitted permits to rebuild the warehouse, a move condemned by Mayor Bass, local officials and community members who describe the proposal as “a slap in the face” to families still coping with the disaster’s aftermath.
