Los Angeles Chargers honor late Billy Ray Smith at San Diego training camp

Jim Harbaugh led the Los Angeles Chargers back to San Diego for two days of training‑camp practices at Torero Stadium, the 6,500‑seat field of the University of San Diego where he began his head‑coaching career 22 years ago.

Before the first padded practice, the team observed a moment of silence for former linebacker Billy Ray Smith, who died at 64 after a long battle with dementia linked to CTE. Players wore “BR” helmet stickers in his honor. This is the second consecutive season the Chargers hold two practices at USD, and quarterback Justin Herbert participated in 7‑on‑7 drills as the camp got underway.
