Los Angeles County officials warn of first rabid raccoon in 50 years
Health officials in Los Angeles County have issued a warning following the discovery of a rabid raccoon in a Westlake Village backyard. This marks the first confirmed case of rabies in a raccoon in the county since 1973.
The animal, which appeared sickly but not aggressive, was found in a residential backyard. Four individuals at a nearby worksite who may have been exposed are currently receiving recommended post-exposure prophylaxis. A vaccinated dog that encountered the raccoon was quarantined and is reported to be doing well.
While the specific variant of the virus is still being investigated, officials believe the raccoon may have been infected by a bat. Los Angeles County Health Officer Muntu Davis advised the public to maintain a safe distance from all wildlife and to avoid touching, handling, or feeding animals, even those that appear healthy.
