Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department settles concealed carry lawsuit

A coalition of gun‑rights groups, including the Second Amendment Foundation, the California Rifle & Pistol Association, Gun Owners of America and others, reached a settlement with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) over its concealed‑carry permit policies. The lawsuit, filed in December 2023, alleged excessive fees and multi‑year processing delays for California Handgun Permits, as well as barriers for non‑residents.

The settlement results in lower application fees, faster processing times, and the ability for qualified non‑residents to obtain permits for the first time. It also confirms compliance with state statutes and recent legislative changes that codify earlier injunctions requiring timely issuance of permits. The groups say the outcome expands Second Amendment freedoms in California and will be monitored to prevent rollback.

LASD did not comment on the agreement.
