Los Angeles Boyle Heights Cold-Storage Warehouse Fire Rages On, Prompting State and City Emergencies

A fire broke out on June 17, 2026, at the Lineage Logistics cold‑storage warehouse (called Big Bear) in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. The 500,000‑square‑foot facility holds roughly 85 million pounds (38 million kilograms) of frozen seafood, pork, beef and poultry destined for the West Coast market. Officials suspect the blaze started when subcontractors were working on rooftop solar panels, but the exact cause remains under investigation.

Because the building is heavily insulated and filled with steel rack shelving, the fire is difficult to suppress. Firefighters have been forced to fight from outside, stripping exterior walls, using heavy water streams, helicopters, and a structural‑firefighting robot. An ammonia leak was reported early on but was later contained. LAFD Chief Jaime Moore said, “We have 85 million pounds of frozen food inside… zero visibility,” underscoring the operational challenges.

The smoke, rich in PM2.5 particles, has spread across Boyle Heights, the San Gabriel Valley, Glendale, Burbank and even shrouded Dodger Stadium. The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a particle‑pollution advisory and advised residents to stay indoors, keep windows closed and wear N95 or P100 masks. Shelter‑in‑place orders were initially imposed and later lifted, while three emergency shelters opened for affected families.

Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass each declared a state of emergency, activating state resources, expediting aid under the California Disaster Assistance Act, and providing masks and air‑purifiers. Bass said, “We will continue working around the clock and doing everything possible to put this fire out completely.” The incident threatens up to $200 million of food supplies and poses a public‑health and environmental risk, prompting the city to classify the event as a public‑health emergency.
