Los Angeles Dodgers at the heart of MLB salary‑cap negotiations

The Los Angeles Dodgers, who posted the second‑highest payroll in Major League Baseball and won back‑to‑back World Series titles, are a focal point in the league’s upcoming collective‑bargaining talks. Owners and the Players’ Union are negotiating a new CBA that could introduce a salary cap, a move the owners say is needed to modernise the sport’s economic model. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said, “the Dodgers understand there is a need to update the overall economic model in the industry,” while players such as catcher Will Smith warned, “of course they’re always gonna go after the people spending the most.”

If a cap is imposed, it could dramatically reshape team spending and player earnings, and the dispute threatens to trigger a lockout as early as the 2026 season. Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas acknowledged the financial advantage of the current roster, noting, “obviously, having those resources is gonna make your team so much better.” The outcome of these negotiations will affect the league’s competitive balance and could impact the start of future MLB seasons.
