Los Angeles 2025 Eaton Fire traced to Southern California Edison equipment
An 18‑month investigation by the Los Angeles County Fire Department concluded that the deadly Eaton Fire, which erupted on Jan. 7 2025 in Altadena, was ignited by electrical arcing on an out‑of‑service Southern California Edison transmission tower. The blaze killed 19 people, destroyed or damaged more than 9,000 homes and businesses, and scorched roughly 22 square miles (57 km²) before being fully contained after nearly a month.
Southern California Edison acknowledged the utility’s possible role, saying it is reviewing the report and continuing to support the community. The company has filed lawsuits alleging that Los Angeles County agencies failed to issue timely evacuation warnings and that water agencies, including Pasadena Water and Power, did not supply sufficient water for firefighting.
In the political arena, Governor Gavin Newsom’s staff is consulting with state lawmakers on legislation that would shift wildfire recovery costs from utilities to insurance policyholders, a move criticized by fire‑survivor groups and consumer advocates who say it would burden victims.
