Los Angeles expands behavioral health services at Medical Center

Los Angeles County officials have announced the expansion of behavioral health services at the Los Angeles General Medical Center campus through the opening of three new facilities at the Restorative Care Village. These new additions include a 24-hour Mental Health Urgent Care Center, a 32-bed Residential Withdrawal Management Program, and a 96-bed Psychiatric Subacute Facility.

The expansion aims to provide compassionate treatment alternatives to crowded emergency rooms and the criminal justice system. The Restorative Care Village also includes a 96-bed Recuperative Care Center designed to provide interim housing, nursing care, and case management for individuals experiencing homelessness who are too ill to recover on the streets. The campus is part of the broader Healthy Village initiative, which integrates healthcare, behavioral health, affordable housing, and community resources.

Addressing these services is critical in Los Angeles, where mental health conditions and substance use disorders often co-occur. Effective recovery frequently requires dual-diagnosis care, where a single care team assesses and treats both addiction and mental health issues simultaneously to prevent relapse and address underlying triggers like trauma or anxiety.
