Los Angeles explores charter reforms and campaign finance amendments
The Los Angeles City Council has convened an Ad Hoc Committee on Charter Review to explore significant structural changes to the city government. Chaired by Tim McOsker, the committee will investigate potential council expansion, police reform, and measures to allow non-citizens to participate in local elections. McOsker noted that the committee aims to modernize city government, improve efficiency, and strengthen accountability within civil service and police disciplinary systems.
In a separate effort regarding charter amendments, Los Angeles voters will face Charter Amendment SC this November. This measure seeks to clarify campaign finance rules for candidates running for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board of Education. The amendment aims to eliminate repetitive language in the city charter to ensure that LAUSD board candidates are subject to the same contribution limits, filing deadlines, and public disclosure requirements as mayoral candidates.
