Los Angeles Lakers rebuild roster around Luka Doncic after LeBron James departure

The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a new era following the departure of LeBron James. The franchise is shifting its focus to build a roster centered around Luka Doncic, who will serve as the team's primary superstar and offensive focal point.

To facilitate this transition, the Lakers have undergone a significant roster overhaul. Key departures include LeBron James, Deandre Ayton, Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart, Jaxson Hayes, and Luke Kennard. To bolster the squad, the team has acquired players such as Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Jaden Hardy, Kevon Looney, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Collin Sexton, Matisse Thybulle, and Ziaire Williams.

A major component of this restructuring was the acquisition of Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz in exchange for two unprotected first-round draft picks (2031 and 2033) and swap rights for 2028 and 2030. Kessler has signed a four-year contract valued at $130 million.

Former NBA champion Horace Grant noted that James' departure leaves a void that extends beyond statistics, citing his leadership and influence in the locker room. While Doncic is expected to lead the team's play, the organization faces the challenge of redefining its identity and building a supporting cast tailored to the Slovenian star's capabilities.
