LeBron James heads to free agency as Lakers overhaul roster
LeBron James confirmed his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers and will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. His agent, Rich Paul, disclosed that James has ten realistic destination teams, with five primary candidates – the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets – and other possibilities including the Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors.
Following James’s exit, the Lakers have been active in the market. They signed forward Walker Kessler to a four‑year, $130 million contract, added Sandro Mamukelashvili (four years, $52 million), Quentin Grimes (four years, $60 million) and Colin Sexton (two years, $19 million). In a separate trade, Los Angeles dealt DeAndre Ayton to the Washington Wizards for guard Jaden Hardy and two future second‑round draft picks. The team also acquired guard Cameron Carr from the New York Knicks and is reportedly pursuing forward Jonathan Kuminga.
Luka Doncic expressed enthusiasm about the Lakers’ recent signings and the contract extension of Austin Reaves. The flurry of moves reflects the Lakers’ effort to rebuild their roster ahead of the 2026‑27 season.
