Los Angeles Lakers set for record $12.5 billion sale

A group led by venture capitalist Josh Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger has reached an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Lakers from Mark Walter. The deal is valued at a record $12.5 billion, setting a new financial benchmark for American sports franchises.

The transaction follows a previous sale in 2025 where Mark Walter acquired the team for $10 billion. This latest deal represents a 25% increase in value within a single year. The sale is currently pending approval from the NBA board of governors.

Amid the ownership transition, several minority shareholders have clarified their positions. Patrick Soon-Shiong, owner of the Los Angeles Times, has indicated he has no intention of selling his 4% stake. Meanwhile, Jeanie Buss is reportedly challenging her siblings' decision to sell their 17.8% family stake in the team.
