Los Angeles Lakers waive Dalton Knecht to meet roster limit

The Los Angeles Lakers have waived forward Dalton Knecht to comply with the NBA's 15-man standard roster limit ahead of the upcoming season. The decision follows unsuccessful attempts by the franchise to trade the 25-year-old, who was selected 17th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Knecht, a former standout at Tennessee, experienced a significant decline in production and playing time during his second season. After a promising rookie campaign where he averaged 9.1 points per game, his output dropped to 4.2 points in 2025-26. His tenure was also marked by a failed trade to the Charlotte Hornets in February 2025, a deal that was rescinded after center Mark Williams failed a physical.

Head coach JJ Redick noted that the team's evolving needs and increased competition at the wing position contributed to the decision. By waiving Knecht, the Lakers have finalized their roster, which includes guard Bronny James. Knecht will now enter the waiver process, after which he may become an unrestricted free agent.
