Los Angeles Lakers waive Dalton Knecht to meet roster limit

The Los Angeles Lakers have waived guard Dalton Knecht to meet the NBA's 15-player roster limit. Knecht, the team's 17th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, saw his playing time and production decline significantly following a promising rookie season.

Prior to his release, the Lakers attempted to facilitate trades to acquire additional frontcourt depth, including exploring deals for players like Jericho Sims. However, these efforts were unsuccessful, leaving the team without the additional center they sought. The decision to waive Knecht also means the Lakers will retain guard Bronny James for the upcoming season.

Knecht's departure comes after a failed trade attempt in February 2025 involving the Charlotte Hornets and center Mark Williams, which was rescinded after Williams failed a physical. His release marks the final roster cutdown for the Lakers ahead of their season opener against the Golden State Warriors.
