Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass Faces Community Outcry Over Boyle Heights Warehouse Fire Cleanup

A June 17 fire ripped through Lineage Logistics' 500,000‑sq‑ft cold‑storage warehouse at 1400 S. Los Palos St. in Boyle Heights, leaving roughly 85 million pounds of food rotting and producing a stench that residents say has caused headaches, nausea and breathing problems. Hundreds of locals gathered at Stevenson Middle School, booing Mayor Karen Bass and other officials while demanding answers. Bass apologized, pledged multiple environmental investigations, a citywide survey of Eastside, South Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley warehouses, and promised to spend more time in the neighborhood, even at night. Lineage Logistics' COO Jeff Rivera also apologized and outlined a remediation plan: door‑to‑door outreach, housing vouchers, grocery and cash assistance, air purifiers, masks, a community hotline, and a 45‑day target to clear the site. About 200 workers have been cleaning up, removing 1.4 million pounds of fire‑damaged material and staging another 3.2 million pounds for removal. Residents continue to demand accountability and long‑term health protections, while officials note monitoring showed no elevated metals or hydrogen fluoride.
