Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass urged to halt shelter dog killings

A longtime animal‑rights advocate, after 16 years of work in Los Angeles, says the city’s shelters are killing large numbers of healthy, adoptable dogs. The criticism focuses on leadership, especially Mayor Karen Bass and the City Council, who can appoint or remove the general manager of Los Angeles Animal Services.

The advocate’s charity filed a lawsuit against the city, the mayor, the council, Animal Services and the LAPD, alleging failure to enforce spay‑neuter laws, lack of affordable services and a misleading “no‑kill” narrative. The case has been dismissed three times, and the lawsuit argues that the city is using taxpayer funds to fight the charity rather than protect animals.

Key issues highlighted include insufficient spay‑neuter programs, inadequate enforcement of existing laws, and the need for public education about the realities of shelter intake. The advocate calls for prevention, education, affordable spay‑neuter services and truthful communication to stop the ongoing euthanasia of dogs in Los Angeles shelters.
